How to Update Motorola Nexus 6 to Android 7.1.2 Nougat via custom AOSP ROM port

The Motorola Nexus 6 was once the most popular mobile phone among Android users. Coming officially from Google means it receives the latest Android updates for the same. However, just like any other manufacturer, the software support period for any Android phone is about 2-3 years. After that, the manufacturers stop rolling out official OTA updates to the devices. A similar thing happened to the stunning Motorola Nexus 6. However, there is still a way to update the Nexus 6 to latest Android 7.1.2 Nougat via official AOSP ROM port.

The best part of owning an Android phone is that it can be modified and tweaked as you wish. As the Android OS is open source, custom ROMS emerge bringing latest features to the system. Similarly, crDroid Android v3.0 is a custom ROM developed for the Nexus 6 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat. The AOSP ROM port brings the latest April 2017 security patch level, Google Pixel Launcher, Google Assistant, Lineage OS 14.1 MODS, Doze mode, No forced encryption, F2FS support, and Sigma Kernel. See the full feature list below.

The Motorola Nexus 6 is receiving an Android 7.1.2 Nougat build with a new AOSP based custom ROM called crDroid. Since it is a custom ROM, your device must be rooted with TWRP recovery setup. Once that is done, install the Android 7.1.2 AOSP ROM normally. See the instructions below.

  • Download the crDroid ROM from here and transfer the file to internal storage.
  • Reboot into TWRP recovery. Turn off phone and press and hold volume down + Power buttons.
  • Take a full backup.
  • Wipe the previous ROM.
  • Install the new 7.1.2 ROM from the storage.
  • Flash Gapps for Android 7.1.
  • Flash the SuperSU 2.79 SR3.
  • Reboot to system.

That’s it. Have fun tweaking with your new firmware update. Let us know how the ROM is working for you.
