Tencent reported about a new QualPwn vulnerability that affects all the phones running Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Snapdragon 845 processors. As the OnePlus 5 and 5T feature the same Qualcomm chipsets, the devices could be vulnerable to the QualPwn exploit. According to Tencent’s blog post, QualPwn vulnerability can exploit Qualcomm WLAN and Modem Over The Air. Here is what the blog quotes:
One of the vulnerabilities allows attackers to compromise the WLAN and Modem over-the-air. The other allows attackers to compromise the Android Kernel from the WLAN chip. The full exploit chain allows attackers to compromise the Android Kernel over-the-air in some circumstance.
Which devices are affected by QualPwn vulnerability? The test was performed on Google Pixel 2 and 3 devices running Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and 845 chipsets. So most of the Android phones with similar chips are vulnerable at this point. Here is the CVE ID of the vulnerability:
- The first issue (Compromise WLAN Issue) – CVE-2019-10539
- The second issue (WLAN into Modem issue) – CVE-2019-10540
- The third issue (Modem into Linux Kernel issue) – CVE-2019-10538
What is the fix for QualPwn vulnerability? August 2019 security patch level! The latest August update, recently released by Google, already has the patch for the given vulnerability. So Oxygen OS 9.0.8 is a critical update for the OnePlus 5 and 5T devices. Its not yet confirmed whether the vulnerability affects the older Snapdragon SoC or not. OnePlus 3 and 3T also received similar Oxygen OS 9.0.5 OTA update.
The previous OTA updates already brought Android 9 Pie OTA update for the two phones with features like Adaptive Battery, Adaptive Brightness, Slice, Actions, Advanced AutoFill, DNS Over TLS, Digital Wellbeing, and support for Google Camera 6.1 mod. Also all of the Oxygen OS 9.5 features like ZenMode, Fnatic Mode, Digital Wellbeing option in settings, etc. are already available in the latest Open Beta updates.
