How to Root MIUI 9 Nougat

MIUI 9 is latest and one of the most popular ROM for Android devices. As MIUI ROM comes stock firmware to Xiaomi devices, MIUI 9 update has arrived for these devices first. The ROM should be ported to other manufacturerโ€™d phones as well. This includes OnePlus, Nexus, Samsung, etc. Currently, the MIUI 9 Beta builds are available for download for a select few Xiaomi devices and users. The official roll out will begin from August 11, 2017. Here, in this tutorial, we will show you how to root MIUI 9 ROM via latest SuperSU or Magisk v13.3. It also includes how to unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP recovery on MIUI 9 update.

The first MIUI 9 build is now available Redmi Note 4 and Note 4X. and Xiaomi Mi 6. The builds are Beta versions and for testing purposes only. You can still flash them flawlessly via stock recovery or even a custom TWRP recovery. We will capture more such MIUI 9 official download links. So stay tuned and see into how to root it.

This tutorial will work on MIUI 9 and MIUI 8 based on latest Android 7.0 Nougat.

How to Unlock The Bootloader on MIUI 9 ROM for Xiaomi?

The procedure for all the Xiaomi devices is the same. You just need to get the the proper TWRP recovery file for your device. It will be useful while installing the TWRPย Recovery. But before we proceed, unlocking the bootloader is a must-do process. This is the first thing to do. This procedure will erase all the stored data. So backup.

Step 1:ย As MIUI 9 is based on Android 7.0 Nougat, you will see a security feature in Developer Option called OEM Unlock. You will need to Enable OEM Unlock first, chick here.

Step 2:ย Also, enable โ€˜USB debuggingโ€™ on your device from Developer Options.ย To enable Developer options, go to Settings> About Device>Tap the Build Number 7 times.

Step 3:ย Install latest Xiaomi mobile drivers.

Step 4:ย Setup ADB and Fastboot drivers for windowsย and then restart.

Step 5: In order to unlock Xiaomi devices officially on MIUI, ย Download MI UNLOCK tool from here and follow the steps.

Step 6:ย You may also want to Disable driver signature enforcement on Windows PC.

Step 7:ย Disable Windows Antivirus, Firewall, or Defender.

Step 8:ย Run the Mi Unlock tool as admin and Sign up for or Login to your account using your Mobile number.

Step 9:ย Connect device to PC via USB cable.

Step 10:ย Click in Unlock option and follow all the instructions there.

Step 11:ย If your device doesnโ€™t have enough permission, thenย Apply for Unlocking Permissionย and try again.

How to install TWRP on MIUI 9?

Step 1:ย Make sure you go through all the procedures listed in Unlocking Bootloader method above including ADB and Fastboot setup, install USB drivers, Enable OEM unlock, Enable USB debugging.

Step 2:ย Download latest TWRP Recovery for your Xiaomi devices. Transfer the TWRP image to PC.

Step 3:ย Nowย go to TWRP image directory on PC and run a command prompt window. Press and hold the โ€˜shiftโ€™ key and right- click anywhere in that folder. This will open the command prompt window. Or simply enter cmd in address bar and hit enter key.

Step 4:ย Connect your Xiaomi device to PC via USB cable.

Step 5:ย Check ADB device connectivity. Enter in cmd:

adbย devices

Step 6:ย Reboot Android to Bootloader or Fastboot mode. Type in cmd:

 adb reboot bootloader

Step 7:ย Itโ€™s time to flash TWRP into Xiaomi devices. Issue the following command:

fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Note:ย Enter the exact name for the TWRP image with proper extension.

Step 8:ย Reboot Xiaomi device to system.ย Issue following command:

fastboot reboot

How to Root MIUI 9 ROM or MIUI 8 on Nougat?

Now that we have setup TWRP recovery, its time to root the latest MIUI 9 ROM for Xiaomi.

Flashing the rooting tool is the final step. There are two types of root methods in 2017. One is the conventional SuperSU binaries and the second is Magisk manager. You can choose either of the two.

  1. Flash latest SuperSU zip via TWRP
  2. Flash latest Magisk v13+ via TWRP

Both have their own advantages. Read it in the tutorials listed on the links. You will also find the installation steps there.

Reboot to system and open the SuperSU and Magisk app and start granting root access to root apps. You may also like custom ROMS like Lineage OS 14.1, Resurrection Remix, Paranoid Android 7.1.2 Nougat.
