What’s new in Stable One UI 8.5?
The One UI 8.5 full changelog is already available, and the update focuses on enhancing communication and creative experiences on Galaxy mobile phones and tablets. It provides a refined and more polished experience across system performance, design, and overall usability. The firmware enhances device stability, improves animations, and optimizes memory and power management for smoother day-to-day performance. Core system components have been optimized for enhanced responsiveness, resulting in faster app launches and more fluid transitions. Users will also notice improvements in connectivity, including more stable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and seamless ecosystem device interactions.
Samsung’s One UI 8.5, built on Android 16, is one of the company’s most ambitious software updates in recent memory. Rather than a simple incremental refresh, it delivers meaningful upgrades across AI, camera, connectivity, security, and everyday usability. Here’s a focused look at everything that’s genuinely new in One UI 8.5.
Visual Design
One UI 8.5 introduces a refreshed visual identity built around transparent blur effects that add depth to the interface, floating elements that react organically to your interactions, and a more refined approach to data visualization. The overall aesthetic aims to feel personal and focused — an interface that stays out of your way while remaining visually polished.
Galaxy AI
The biggest upgrades in One UI 8.5 revolve around Galaxy AI, which becomes more deeply woven into the everyday experience. Call screening arrives via Bixby Text Call, letting a call assistant answer on your behalf, ask the caller their name and reason for calling, and display the conversation in real time so you can decide whether to pick up.
Image editing takes a major leap forward with text prompt-based editing — simply describe the change you want, such as swapping the color of clothing or adding an object to a scene, and Galaxy AI handles the rest. Photo Assist gains the ability to extract objects from one photo and place them naturally into another, apply style filters to any photo (not just people or pets), and generate AI images in a continuous session without saving each iteration. Creative Studio moves to the Apps screen for easier access, letting you create wallpapers, stickers, and profile images.
Bixby becomes significantly smarter, understanding natural language commands without requiring exact feature names. Interpreter gains auto language detection, so it switches between languages automatically during a conversation. AI Select can now be triggered instantly by long-pressing the edge handle, with a new Rewind button for selecting content from earlier in a video. Now Brief also makes its way to the lock screen, surfacing personalized, context-aware suggestions.
Camera
The camera app gains a dedicated document scanning mode, with a scan button that appears automatically when you point the camera at a document. It captures multiple pages into a single PDF and uses a Remove tool to clean up fingers, folded corners, and moiré patterns automatically.
Auto Motion Photos is a smart storage-saving addition — your camera only records motion data when it detects actual movement in the scene; otherwise, it saves a standard still image. Dual recording lets you film simultaneously with both front and rear cameras. Log video recording now supports real-time cinematic LUT previews, so you can see exactly how your color-graded footage will look while you’re still shooting. Three new portrait filters round out the camera improvements.
On the lock screen side, wallpapers featuring people or pets now automatically adjust to fit your clock and widget layout. New downloadable wallpapers don’t consume permanent storage, and you can add live weather effects to any wallpaper directly from the preview screen. More font styles now support thickness customization for the lock screen clock.
Weather, Communication, and Clock
The Weather widget on the home screen now shows a precipitation graph when rain or snow is expected within the next few hours. A new Pollen Index tracks tree, grass, and ragweed levels — a genuinely useful addition for allergy sufferers.
On the communication side, callers can now leave voice messages directly on your phone, with the message appearing on screen as it’s recorded so you can pick up mid-message. Call decline messages are now smarter, suggesting context-aware responses based on your calendar and current activity.
The Clock app gains two new features: alarm screens can display current weather conditions as a background, and a new time zone slider makes it easy to compare times across multiple locations at a glance.
Connectivity and Quick Share
One UI 8.5 introduces Storage Share, which makes files from your other Samsung phones, tablets, and PCs accessible directly in My Files — and your phone’s files accessible from other Samsung devices, including TVs. Auto Hotspot lets you share your connection with your Samsung family group or a custom group. Family Device Sharing bundles Quick Share, Camera Share, Storage Share, Auto Hotspot, and Multi Control into a single unified feature for family members.
Perhaps the most impactful connectivity change is Quick Share’s new AirDrop support. You can now share photos, videos, and files directly with iPhones, iPads, and Macs — a practical, ecosystem-bridging upgrade for mixed-device households. Quick Share also gains privacy controls to restrict incoming shares to trusted accounts, plus AI-powered photo sharing suggestions that recognize people in your photos and suggest sending directly to them.
Samsung Health, Battery, and Security
Samsung Health’s weekly reports now include medication tracker and mindfulness data. You can start meditations directly from your Galaxy Watch, and antioxidant measurements can be taken from Galaxy Watch 8 or Watch Ultra without a phone connection.
The Battery settings screen has been redesigned for clarity, showing remaining time, charging status, and a week of usage history. Power saving mode now offers two distinct tiers: Standard for moderate savings with customizable limits, and Maximum for disabling all non-essential features.
On the security front, Privacy Alerts proactively notify you when an app’s permissions put your data at risk. Theft Protection gains a Failed Authentication Lock that automatically secures your device after repeated failed biometric or PIN attempts. Auto Blocker gets a temporary disable option with an automatic 30-minute re-enable timer, and Knox Matrix now alerts you when any device on your Samsung account needs a security update.
Accessibility and System Improvements
Accessibility gains include direct hearing aid controls from the Accessibility shortcut, magnification that follows your cursor or keyboard focus, the new Dwell Action and Corner Actions features split from the previous Auto Action setting, and a setting to dim strobing effects in videos.
Among the broader system improvements, Galaxy Z Fold users can now keep their main screen app open on the cover screen when folding. The Quick Panel is now fully customizable — add, remove, and reorder any control. Samsung Notes gains full table support with adjustable widths, colors, and borders. Partial screen recording lets you capture only a selected area. DeX now remembers app window sizes and positions between sessions. And a new Calculator nudge surfaces clipboard numbers and formulas automatically when you open the app.
