Meta has just announced the rollout of Private Message Summaries, a feature that leverages Meta AI to provide quick, private summaries of unread messages in your chats. While some may consider it as just another AI gimmick, for some it’s a useful implementation of AI to addresses a real pain point.
WhatsApp also brings a new modern WhatsApp dark theme for mobile and WhatsApp for Web as well.
What is Private Message Summaries and how it works?
As the name suggests, Private Message Summaries are simply summaries of the conversations that you may have missed, generated by AI.
WhatsApp’s solution is elegantly simple in concept but sophisticated in execution. When you have unread messages in a chat, you can now request a summary that gives you the gist of what’s been discussed without having to read every individual message.
The feature integrates seamlessly into the existing WhatsApp interface. When you open a chat with multiple unread messages, you’ll have the option to generate a summary. Within seconds, Meta AI processes your unread messages and provides a concise overview of the key topics, decisions, and information shared in your absence.
This means you can quickly understand whether:
- Important decisions were made in a work group chat
- Plans changed in a social group
- Urgent matters arose in a family conversation
- New information was shared that requires your immediate attention
The AI Behind Message Summaries
The company Meta explains the AI working behind the chat summaries. The feature utilizes Meta AI, the same artificial intelligence system that powers various Meta products. However, what makes this implementation particularly noteworthy is how it balances AI capability with privacy protection. The AI is sophisticated enough to understand context, identify key information, and present it in a digestible format, but it operates under strict privacy constraints that we’ll explore in detail.
What about privacy?
Meta also says, WhatsApp’s Message Summaries isn’t the AI itself, but how the company has engineered the feature to maintain their industry-leading privacy standards. The implementation relies on what WhatsApp calls “Private Processing technology” – a sophisticated approach that ensures your messages remain private even when being processed by AI.
According to Meta’s engineering blog and technical whitepaper,
WhatsApp’s core privacy promise, ensuring no one except you and the people you’re talking to can access or share your personal messages, not even Meta or WhatsApp.
However, it does seem like Meta uses their server to process AI summaries, but the transaction is encrypted. Here is what they say:
Response from Private Processing: The processed results are then returned to the user’s device, encrypted with a key that only the device and the pre-selected Private Processing server ever have access to. Private Processing does not retain access to messages after the session is completed.
How to enable AI summaries in WhatsApp?
Unlike many tech features that are enabled by default and require users to opt out, Message Summaries is turned off by default. Users must actively choose to enable the feature, ensuring that only those who want AI assistance in managing their messages will use it.
You can decide whether to use them, and can use Advanced Chat Privacy to select which chats can be shared for AI features.
Message Summaries is rolling out in the English language to people in the United States and we hope to bring it to other languages and countries later this year.
