Android Auto Update
Everything new in Android Auto update

Android Auto 14.4 stable has just been released, laying the groundwork for an exciting future showcased at the Android Show: I/O Edition event. While this update primarily delivers stability improvements and minor feature enhancements, it quietly includes the code foundation for all upcoming capabilities.

Google made a groundbreaking announcement on May 13, 2025, revealing plans to integrate Gemini AI into both Android Auto and Google built-in vehicle systems. This marks a significant evolution in the driving experience, with Google demonstrating exactly how these AI features will function within Android Auto.

The automotive technology journey started with Android Auto bringing essential phone applications to vehicle displays. This innovation made navigation, communication and entertainment safely accessible across more than 250 million vehicles worldwide.

The upcoming Gemini integration will be the most significant development yet. This powerful AI assistant will enable natural conversational interaction with vehicles, providing intelligent assistance that fundamentally changes how drivers engage with their cars.

New features coming to Android Auto and included in 14.4 stable update

Google Gemini AI Assistant for Android Auto

Google officially showcased Gemini AI running on Android Auto. Google Assistant is officially retiring, including all of its features like the Driving Mode setting; which is no longer available on Android devices.

If you’ve noticed the chunky bottom bar in Google Maps has disappeared, you’re experiencing this change firsthand. The feature has officially been removed from the platform, leaving users to adapt to temporary alternatives until Gemini integration arrives.

However, Google has confirmed that a Gemini-powered driving experience will arrive “sometime later this year” to replace the outgoing Assistant-based version.

Gemini AI will eventually replace the existing Google Assistant as Android Auto, Android Automotive (AOSS) smartphones, Wear OS, and smart TVs as well.

Gemini features for Android Auto

With Gemini, you can:

  • Communicate across language barriers by having messages automatically translated into over 40 different languages
  • Search for restaurants or points of interest along your route with natural language queries like “find some good taco places along the way”
  • Access information from reviews and answer common questions about businesses you’re interested in visiting
  • Connect seamlessly with Google Maps, YouTube Music, Spotify, Calendar, and other apps
  • Even locate information buried in your Gmail, such as the location of your child’s upcoming soccer game

Gemini Live on Android Auto

The Gemini Live feature introduces a more conversational AI experience that’s perfectly suited for driving. By simply saying “Hey Google, let’s talk,” drivers can engage Gemini in brainstorming sessions or get assistance with important matters.

For example, if you’re planning for surprise for your partner’s birthday, you could ask Gemini for advice on approaching it. The AI can provide thoughtful responses and even refine strategies based on follow-up questions like “When is the best time of day to have this surprise?”

This functionality will be available on Android Auto-compatible vehicles in the coming months and will reach cars with Google built-in later this year, including models like the new Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport.

Future of Android Auto

More Entertainment Options: Responding to user feedback, Google is broadening its automotive app catalog to include games and video applications. These additions are particularly useful during downtime, such as when waiting for an electric vehicle to charge or during those moments parked waiting to pick up children.

Digital Car Key Expansion: The digital car key feature, which turns your phone into a car key, is expanding to more vehicle brands. Already available for some models, this technology is coming to Audi, Volvo, and Polestar vehicles, with additional manufacturers on the horizon.

Material 3 Expressive Design

Google’s upcoming Material 3 Expressive is coming to Android phones, Wear OS, and Android Auto! This new design language is added in Android 16 by default and focuses on providing more emotional, engaging, and brand-reflective user interfaces. It builds upon the foundation of Material Design 3 (M3) by offering expanded theming, expressive shapes, motion, and component flexibility, allowing developers to create unique, memorable experiences that better align with a product’s identity and user expectations.

Material 3 Expressive is an improvement over existing Material 3 design, which Google has implemented across all Android apps. The Expressive design adds a gradient look and new animations for various actions like navigation, alert dialog, floating action button, search bar, toolbar, rail items, and much more!
