Lineage OS is currently the most popular custom ROM for Android phones. Its official development started at the beginning of this year (2017), after the separation of Cyanogen Inc. As Cyanogen parted, LineageOS originated with similar features; while retaining the full functionality of CyanogenMod. It is still open source and hence the sources are always updated and made available to the public. The first branch of the upcoming Lineage OS 15.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo is now seeding for the the OnePlus 5T device – codenamed dumpling.
Lineage OS recently uploaded the latest changelog v15 which brought support for several new devices and also featured several vulnerability fixes including WiFi KRACK patch. However, it also stated that Lineage ROM development may jump directly to Android 8.1 Oreo with LineageOS 15.1. This is because Google already released stable 8.1 Oreo update and the official Lineage nightly builds are still based on Android 7.1 Nougat.
As the sources for Android 8.1 Oreo are now available for public, Lineage OS can now move directly onto the latest firmware update. The development has already begun and we are seeing a new lineage-15.1 branch for one of the OnePlus devices.
The first build for the latest Lineage OS 15.1 is now seeding for OnePlus 5T. We may soon see a first Android 8.1 Oreo ROM for the phone.
OnePlus 5T is currently sports Oxygen OS 4.7.5 based on Android 7.1 Nougat. The Open Beta program for the device will begin soon. However, its predecessor OnePlus 5 have received a total of 2 Open Beta Oreo update.
What does this mean for the future of Lineage OS?
As the first branch for Lineage OS 15.1 build is now seeding, we may see similar branches for other devices as well. This also confirms that Lineage may skip Android 8.0 and jump directly to 8.1 Oreo for some devices. So if you are a developer, then fork the code and build a custom ROM for your device.
