Material 3 Expressive Design
Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language is making its debut in Android Auto. This advanced design framework, set to be the default in Android 16, focuses on creating more emotionally engaging and brand-reflective user interfaces.
Building on the Material Design 3 foundation, the Expressive variant offers:
- Expanded theming capabilities
- More expressive visual shapes
- Enhanced motion and animations
- Greater component flexibility
- Improved developer customization options
This allows developers to create distinctive, memorable experiences that better reflect product identity while meeting user expectations. The Expressive design introduces gradient aesthetics and refined animations across navigation elements, alert dialogs, floating action buttons, search bars, toolbars, and rail components.
Vibrant Visual Overhaul
Android Auto’s theming system has received a significant upgrade, featuring more vibrant color schemes in both dark and light modes. The Google Assistant icon has transitioned from its traditional blue theme to adopt sleek, flat Material 3 icons. Additionally, icons and wallpapers will automatically sync from your connected smartphone, creating a more cohesive user experience.
Gemini Assistant Integration
Google I/O 2025 officially unveiled Gemini Live assistant integration for vehicles, enabling natural voice conversations and seamless multitasking through intuitive voice commands.
Gemini for Cars empowers drivers to:
- Execute multiple tasks simultaneously using voice commands
- Engage in natural, conversational interactions with their vehicles
- Locate charging stations through conversational requests
- Navigate to destinations mentioned in emails or messages
The Gemini Live experience introduces a more conversational AI approach perfectly suited for driving scenarios. By simply saying “Hey Google, let’s talk,” drivers can engage Gemini for brainstorming sessions or assistance with various tasks.
This functionality will gradually roll out to Android Auto-compatible vehicles in the coming months, with cars featuring Google built-in receiving updates later this year, including models such as the Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport.
Future Developments and Roadmap
