Google has now changed the name of the default camera of its devices to Pixel camera, starting version 9.1 on the Pixel 8 Pro. However, the GCAM 8.5 is still popular considering it still supports Android 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, and in some cases even Android 9.0.

GCAM 8.5 was released for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro with new features like Night Sight mode, Top Shot, Super Res Zoom, Motion Mode, Long Shot, and HDR+ with Exposure and White Balance Controls.

What’s more? the GCAM 8.5 MOD by developers like BigKaka and Shamim feature support for a wide variety of Android phones, adds support for loading custom config files using XML files, libpatcher, support for secondary camera lenses, adds camera2API support, and much more.

While Google doesn’t feature a changelog or patch notes on the App Store other than general bug fixes, from what we can tell, the Google Camera 8.5 update has major improvements over the previous versions. It loads faster and is snappier.

GCAM 8.5 can now capture photos much faster. You can take pictures every half second in low lighting. The Night Sight can capture photos faster now too.

With earlier versions, it would take at least two to three seconds between shutter clicks while taking photos. The shutter speed has significantly improved with Google Camera v8.5.

You will notice new Haptic feedback for the shutter and also while switching the front/rear camera modes. There is a new centering visual while using Night Sight mode. Furthermore, while selecting zoom levels in the camera app, the indicator now has some slide animation to it.

The camera user interface has also received some minor tweaks. Switching between the camera modes now also have some animation to it which makes it look more seamless.

One user also claimed that the update has improved photo clarity and crispness. The rear camera photos including the 1x and 4x zooms have also improved significantly.

The transition is significantly smoother when sliding to zoom because the viewfinder appears to pan slightly to the right (between 2x and 4x) to align with the telephoto lens.

The latest version of Google Camera also now supports Wear OS 2.0 devices connected to Pixel or other phones. Some features are not available on all devices.
