Epic vs Google Legal Saga: Behind Fortnite’s Ban
Fortnite was removed from the Google Play Store on 13 August 2020, after Epic Games added a direct in‑app payment system that bypassed Google’s mandatory billing and 30% commission, which triggered Epic’s antitrust lawsuit against Google.
Why was Fortnite removed?
Epic secretly added its own direct payment option inside Fortnite on Android, letting players buy V‑Bucks without using Google Play Billing or paying Google’s 30% fee.
Google responded by pulling Fortnite from the Play Store the same day, stating that the app violated Play Store policies on in‑app payments, though players could still sideload Fortnite or use other stores like Samsung’s Galaxy Store.
The Epic Games v. Google lawsuit
On the same day Google removed Fortnite, Epic filed an antitrust lawsuit (Epic Games v. Google) in U.S. federal court, arguing that Google illegally maintained a monopoly in Android app distribution and in‑app billing and used restrictive contracts to shut out rival app stores and payment options.
In 2023 a jury found Google liable on all key antitrust counts, and in 2025 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the verdict and the injunction requiring Google to open its Android ecosystem to more competition.
Current status and return to Play Store
After five years off the store, Fortnite returned to the Google Play Store in the US in December 2025, following the appeals court decision and a “comprehensive settlement” between Epic and Google that implements changes ordered by the court.
The settlement and injunction means Google has now reinstated restrictions around alternative billing and app stores, which is why Fortnite has now being distributed again via Google Play alongside other channels.
Which countries can download Fortnite mobile?
As of now the only country where Fortnite is available is the United States. It may soon roll out in other parts of the world, including Europe, the UK, India, and more.
