Google introduced Material 3 Expressive design language with Android 16 QPR1 and now with the latest September 2025 Pixel Feature Drop. The search giant has been integrating M3E design for various apps and services including the Google app, Android Auto, Pixel Camera, and Google Phone across Android OS, Wear OS, and now in the Gmail app! Material 3 Expressive redesign with enhanced visual elements come to Gmail mobile app with v2025.09.01.

Gmail’s Material 3 Expressive redesign is now available for everyone for users across the glove with the latest September update. However, the visual change may only be visible for select Android versions including latest 16, 15, or older.

The homepage and similar views, including the Google Chat tab, now feature a unified message list contained within a single rounded container. This design choice mirrors Google Messages while differentiating itself from other applications that display individual items in separate containers.

Interactive elements receive notable attention with new swipe actions for archiving, deleting, and marking messages as read or unread. These actions now feature an engaging pill-shaped animation that adds both visual appeal and a modern touch to the user experience. The top search in mail also incorporates a redesign.

When users open individual emails, the container design language continues throughout the interface. The upper portion houses the app bar and subject line within a cohesive container. Gmail has refined its initial redesign by replacing outlined buttons with solid, filled designs. The Reply and Forward buttons now utilize Dynamic Color technology, creating strong visual contrast against the unchanged bottom bar.

The Compose screen and homescreen widget remain unchanged for now, suggesting future updates may address these areas.

Furthermore, Gmail is making it even easier to manage your subscriptions from one place. Gmail gets a new “Manage subscriptions” feature that streamlines this chaos by providing a centralized hub where you can view and control all your subscription emails.

The “Manage subscriptions” view organizes your active subscriptions by frequency, displaying the most persistent senders alongside the exact number of emails they’ve delivered over recent weeks. Simply click on any sender to see their complete email history with you. From there, unsubscribing takes just one click—Gmail automatically sends the unsubscribe request to the sender, handling the process entirely on your behalf.

Access this feature by clicking the navigation menu in the top-left corner of your inbox and selecting “Manage subscriptions.”

Followed by Gmail getting Gemini, manage subscription and Material 3 Expressive is the biggest update so far.
