Here is how Google Gemini on Wear OS works
The biggest change coming to Wear OS devcies is Gemini assistant replacing the native assistant. Google officially announced that Gemini is replacing the legacy Google Assistant on Android phones, Wear OS, Android Auto, and even Android TV/Box.
Gemini can connect to your apps. So you can ask about anything, including opening times of a restaurant, about emails you sent to your friends and get the answer right on your wrist — without needing to pause the work you are doing and pull out your phone.
Just speak naturally to get more done while you’re on the go. Gemini can handle tasks across apps, answer questions and recall important details for you.
Try asking Gemini to:
- Stay connected: ‘Send a message to Nadia telling her sorry I’m late’
- Get info: ‘Where’s the restaurant Emily emailed about for dinner tonight?’
- Control music: ‘Create a playlist for a 10-minute-mile run’
- Remember details: ‘Remember I parked on level 2, space 403’
Take a look at Gemini working on Wear OS:
This multi-modal approach ensures that you can access your AI assistant regardless of your current situation or environment, whether you’re in a quiet office setting or a noisy outdoor environment.
One of the most impressive aspects of Gemini on Wear OS is its ability to understand natural speech patterns and deliver concise, actionable responses. The AI assistant excels in situations where your hands are occupied or when quick information access is crucial.
Google provides some scenarios where Gemini can be helpful:
Cooking and Kitchen Scenarios: When you’re preparing meals and your hands are covered in ingredients, you can simply ask, “For how long should I roast sliced vegetables, and at what temperature?” The AI provides immediate cooking guidance without requiring you to clean your hands or search through recipe apps.
Weather and Planning Queries: As you’re heading out for daily activities, a quick “Do I need an umbrella today?” gives you instant weather insights, helping you make informed decisions about your day.
Advanced Task Management and App Integration
Gemini’s integration with Wear OS goes beyond simple voice commands. The AI assistant can handle complex, multi-step tasks that previously required extensive phone interaction. This capability transforms your smartwatch into a powerful productivity tool.
Google provides some scenarios where Gemini can be helpful:
Fitness and Communication: During exercise activities like running or cycling, you can maintain your workout momentum while handling communications: “Send a message to Nadja apologizing for running late” or create customized content like “Create a playlist for a 10-minute-mile run.”
Email and Calendar Management: Business professionals will appreciate the ability to quickly catch up on communications by asking, “Summarize my last email from Emily,” or efficiently manage scheduling with commands like “Add my son’s next five baseball games to my calendar.”
Navigation and Location Services: When time is critical, combine information retrieval with action: “What is the address for my dentist appointment today? Navigate there.” This seamless integration eliminates the typical friction between finding information and taking action.
Google Services Integration
To maximize Gemini’s capabilities, users need to enable integration with Google services like Gmail and Google Calendar through the Gemini app settings on their paired smartphone. This setup process grants necessary permissions for the AI to access and manage your personal information securely.
Memory and Reminder Capabilities
Gemini’s memory function addresses one of the most common daily challenges: keeping track of small but important details. This feature transforms your smartwatch into a reliable external memory system.
Temporary Detail Storage: Before entering environments where you might forget important information, you can instruct Gemini to “Remember I’m using locker 43 today” or “Remember I parked on level 4, spot 27.” This functionality is particularly valuable in busy or stressful situations.
Proactive Task Management: The AI can also handle forward-looking reminders: “Remind me to go grocery shopping after work” ensures important tasks don’t slip through the cracks during busy days.
Technical Requirements: Device and Software Specifications
The Gemini rollout targets devices running Wear OS 4 or higher, ensuring compatibility with modern smartwatch hardware. Devices upgrading to Wear OS 6 will benefit from enhanced integration with brand-specific applications, maintaining the ecosystem of apps users rely on daily.
Connectivity Requirements: The service requires an active internet connection and proper setup with a compatible smartphone. The AI assistant leverages the same advanced models that power Gemini on mobile devices, ensuring consistent performance and capabilities across platforms.
Regional Variations: Users should note that specific activation commands and features may vary based on geographic location, reflecting Google’s approach to localization and regional preferences.

- Update or install Gemini. You may also uninstall and reinstall it for bugfix.
- Launch the Gemini and let it go through a setup.
- On your watch under Settings and Default Apps, select Assistant.
- Under Settings, Advanced, and button mappings, change the Bixby shortcut to Assistant.
If you’re getting stuck in the setup because “Your region’s language is not yet supported on Galaxy Watch”, don’t worry, that’s Google’s language lock, not the region.
