Download & Install Android 14 DP2 via OTA updates, Factory Images, and GSI (Generic System Images)

Like every year, it is time for the new Android OS upgrade. Today, Google released the new Android 14 Developer Preview 2 for most Google Pixel devices. As the name suggests, this is a developer preview meant for testing your app compatibility with the next-gen mobile OS. Here, download Android 14 DP2 via OTA updates, factory images, and GSI for Google Pixel 7, 7 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G) devices.

Android 14 DP 1 was released last month at the same time featuring just an SDK and API bump. No new features were added as compared to Android 13. Android 14 DP 2, on the other hand, brings a ton of new features to test.

• Grant partial access to photos and videos
• Detect when users take device screenshots
• Changes to how users experience non-dismissable notifications
• Regional preferences
• Apps can kill only their own background processes
• Media owner package names might be redacted
• Additional restrictions on starting activities from the background
• Improvements for app stores

Apart from this, users have found the following features:

The new back gesture arrow icon and improved Predictive back gesture are now enabled by default.

Media player widget on lockscreen and notification panel got new shimmering wave effects + tapping effect.

Flash the camera light or the screen when you receive notifications or when alarm sound.

New monochrome color palette, Clock settings and full-screen wallpaper setting UI.

Wallpaper and Style has a new monochrome palette with a black and white icon in the basic colors set.

Android 14 may allow you to create an emoji wallpaper on your Pixel.

A new “Emoji Wallpaper” app has been discovered under /product. When enabled through the debug flag, a new “Emoji Lab” set will appear in the wallpaper list. Clicking on it will open a page that allowed you to create new wallpapers with different emojis.

You can choose up to 14 emoji to be included in the custom wallpaper, choose one of the patterns: “Mosaic”, “Lotus”, “Stacks”, “Placer”, “Prism”; and choose one of the colors. It is also possible to choose a random set.

Pixel Launcher works on updating the app shortcuts popup window.

Google is working on an update to the design of the window that appears when you hold down an app icon. It’s now two solid containers: one for app shortcuts, the other for everything else.

In addition, the parallel bars on the right side, signaling that an object can be dragged, are gone, but the functionality itself remains. It is worth assuming that the design is not yet complete.

This change is hidden behind the developer flag ENABLE_MATERIAL_U_POPUP.

Unfortunately, the Google Pixel 4 XL/4, Pixel 3 series, Pixel 2 series and the OG Pixel will not receive any further Android OS updates as they are officially out of life support.

However, the good news is Android GSI will be available once the Beta is released next month. You can test Android 14 on almost any new Android devcie supporting Project Treble.

Android 14 Developer Preview system images are available for download.

The easiest way to get Android 14 on Pixel devices is via the new Android Flash Tool portal. Simply sign in with your Google Account associated with your Pixel phone and follow the instructions.

You will need to enable USB Debugging (ADB access) and OEM Unlocking before flashing the Android 14 DP 2.

Flashing Factory Images or flashing OTA files from Android 13 is another way to upgrade. Note that, you must backup to Google One or Google drive or PC before flashing any new OS.
