Samsung Gcam mod

Samsung recently rolled out the most anticipated One UI 2.5 firmware update for the Galaxy S20 series with August 2020 security patch. One UI 2.5 basically launched with the Note 20 series. The manufacturer promised that the same update with come to the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra with all the new features. Apparently, One UI 2.5 update blocks Google Camera apps from running on the Galaxy S20 series. Users who upgraded their devices have started reporting that the Gcam mods, that worked prior to the upgrade, suddenly stopped working.

This is bad news for all the Samsung users as the One UI 2.5 firmware will be rolling out to the Galaxy S10 series, Note 10 series, Galaxy S9 series, Note 9, and more. So if the Samsung is intentionally blocking Google Camera app from running, then devices like Galaxy S9 and Note 9 are screwed forever. Thatโ€™s because One UI 2.5 firmware based on Android 10 will be the last major update the two devices will get.

While this only concerns Snapdragon variants, as the Exynos variants cannot run Gcam mods anyway, seems like Samsung just want to punish the customers for buying their smartphones. Even if you do manage to run Gcam mods on your Exynos Galaxy S20, it wonโ€™t work after One UI 2.5. If thatโ€™s the way Samsung is going with One UI 3.0 based on Android 11, then thatโ€™s a major problem.

Samsung giveth and taketh away

Apparently, thatโ€™s how Samsung works. We have seen the same pattern happen to the Bixby button in the past. Some Galaxy devices like the S8, Note 8, S9, and Note 9 came with an additional Bixby button. Some users werenโ€™t quite satisfied with the functionalities of Bixby. Some users even found it infuriating due to accidental clicks and outright disabled it. As users wanted a better solution, they started remapping the button for something better.

Samsung soon learned this. So they gave users a choice. A choice to disable Bixby entirely. While the manufacturer could have easily given users the functionality to remap the button into something useful, Samsung outright disabled it. So now, it is just a useless button on the older Galaxy smartphones.

Same thing happened with Adhell (search the site) โ€“ the amazing full fledged Ad blocker and system app disabler for Samsung. Yes, Samsung blocked it. Reports are that Samsung is getting rid of Bixby altogether; replacing it with Google Assistant. However, if we are to guess, the new assistant will degraded to the point that itโ€™s barely usable.
