4. How to root Android 8.0 Oreo, 7.1 Nougat using Magisk?

Updated November 2017: Latest Magisk v14.5 and Magisk v14.3 now available for download along with Magisk Manager 5.4.2. The latest update now officially supports Google Pixel 2 devices. This means rooting Android 8.0/8.1 Oreo is now even more compatible. You can also root Oxygen OS 5.0 Oreo build for OnePlus devices. This is really a great news for all Android users running the previous Magisk v14.3 and Magisk Manager v5.3.5 who faces some bugs and incompatibility. Very Special thanks to XDA developer topjohnwu for releasing the update. The downloads are listed below along with the update procedure.

Official Support For Google Pixel 2 devices:

Now, Magisk has official support for Google Pixel 2 devices. Pixel devices have unique partitioning and hence a lot of changes were needed in Magisk. Overcoming every such hassle, the official support for Pixel has been released. The update also supports Android One devices like Xiaomi Mi A1.

First, the kernel has to be patched to boot with initramfs under all circumstances. Then, there is a need to replace the init binary to handle whether boot into recovery or system, construct the rootfs, and mount system properly. Finally, we need to patch the fstab placed in the dtb to remove the dm-verity on vendor. there are a lot more quirks such as file based encryption, A/B partition detection, etc.

Important:

You need to have a bootloader unlocked device to use magisk
You must have working TWRP Recovery Installed on your device.
Follow the steps correctly otherwise you may brick your device.
Before following the guide, take a complete backup of your phone for safer side.
Ensure that your phone has at least 50-60% charged to prevent the accidental shut down in-between the process.

Make sure your device has latest TWRP installed. Read: How to install TWRP?
Reboot into TWRP recovery.
Take a full Nandroid Backup.
Tap on the install option from the TWRP recovery.
Navigate to Magisk zip and select it.
Confirm flash operation.
Reboot to system.
