Update Moto E Moto G Moto X and Photon Q

CyanogenMod and itโ€™s new source code version 13 brings the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow nightly builds to many Android devices. The latest additions to their repository are the Moto G 2015, Moto E LTE 2015, Moto X Play, and the Photon Q each codenamed osprey,ย surnia, lux and xt897. All these are Motorola devices and some of these devices may never see official updates from the manufacturer. The only way is to update it using custom ROMS like CyanogenMod 13. However, other Motorola devices like Moto X, Moto X Play/Pure, Moto E and Moto G have already received official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update over the air. We also have the factory image files of Android M in case you want to restore your device to stock.

Now, CyanogenMod 13 nightlies have started rolling out to the 2015 Moto E LTE and Moto G, both of which share very similar internals. Marshmallow has also hit the slightly beefier Moto X Play. The Photon Qย launched in 2012, however, ย is still running Android 4.1. This phone comes with a high-end qwerty keypad andย after four years later it nowย able to run the latestย version of Android ย with a custom ROM.

Prerequisites

1. Verify your device before you proceed. The listed ROMS are compatible with Galaxy S3 for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile variants only.

2. Make sure you have a custom recovery installed on your device. Latest build fromย TWRPย is highly recommended. See how to install the TWRP recovery from our tutorial page.

3. Make sure you have latest device drivers setup on your PC in order to transfer the files to your deviceโ€™s internal storage. Get it from the official pageย of your device manufacturer.

How to Update Moto E, Moto G, Moto E and Photon Q with Marshmallow using CM 13

Step 1: Downloadย theย ROMย  of your choice from above. Also, download the Android 6.0 Marshmallow compatible Google Apps from the above download section. If you are looking for root after installation, download the SuperSU package from the list.

Step 2: Transfer all the necessary files to you deviceโ€™s internal storage or SDcard. Place the files where you can easily locate it.

Step 3:ย Now boot into TWRP recovery. To do so, turn off your device completely and then press and hold the power button and volume down key for a few seconds. Once you see the TWRPย logo, that means you have successfully booted into the recovery. Alternatively, if you have rooted device, then use Android apps like the Quick boot or Boot Smart.

Step 4:ย Once into TWRP, take a Nandroidย backup. To do so, tap Backup option and select all the partitions including the system, data, boot, recovery, EFS and cache(optional).

Step 5:ย Now wipe the current system. To do so, return to home screen and tap the Wipe option in TWRP. Tap Advanced Wipe and select partitions like system, boot, data, cache, Dalvik cache. Do not, in any case, select internal storage, unless you know what you are doing.

Step 6:ย Now return to the home screen again and tap Install option. Navigate to the ROM file fromย your internal storage and select it.

Step 7:ย Now swipe right on the confirmation action button below to install the ROM.

Step 8: Once installed, go back and select the compatible Google apps zip file from the location in your internal storage.

Step 9:ย Once selected, swipe right on the confirmation action button below to flash them.

Step 10:ย Once installation completes, you can wipe the Dalvik cache or simply chooseย reboot to system option.

Step 11:ย Once you reboot, you should see the new bootย logo. This means that the ROM has been installed successfully. First boot may take a while. If the ROM doesnโ€™t boot or you come across boot loop, a factory reset from the recovery should do the trick. If that fails, you can restore your previous ROM from the TWRP recovery.

I have successfully installed Cynogenmod 13 on my Moto X Play. But can you please provide me the steps to Re-lock the Bootloader after installing CynogenMod 13?

Relocking Bootloader after installing a custom ROM is a bad idea. You should not re-lock it may brick your device.
