download & Install Android 7.1.1 Nougat Developer Preview NPF10C

With the launch of the new Google Pixel devices comes the stunning new Android version 7.1 Nougat OS along with its new Apps, and features. However, the firmware is exclusive to the Pixel (XL) for now and Google is pushing it to the Nexus range with its Android Beta Program. The Beta Program is basically meant for testers who would like to run the latest OS from Google on their Android phones. The Android 7.1.1 Nougat Developer Previewย comes with the firmware build number Android N-MR1 NPF10C with October 5, 2016, security level and latest SDK version 25.

Moreover, the Nougat DP is rolling out to 3 Google devices including the Nexus 6P, the Nexus 5X, and the Pixel C for now. The rest of the Google-supported devices including the Nexus 6, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, and Pixel C, General Mobile 4G (Android One) shall be updated directly to Android 7.1 Developer Preview 2 in the month of November when its time for the monthly security patch updates. Later in December, the final Developer Preview will be released toย AOSP and OEM ecosystem including Google Pixel and Pixel XL.

The Android 7.1 Nougat was released this morning but due to certain critical bugs, AOSP source was updated to Android version 7.1.1. Moreover, as it is a Beta firmware, you may experience some bugs. However, it wonโ€™t break your device or brick it if you follow simple instructions required for the installation.

Whatโ€™s New with Android 7.1.1 Nougat Developer Preview?

Hereโ€™s a quick rundown of whatโ€™s included in the final Developer Preview of Nougat:

  • App shortcuts API โ€” lets you surface key actions directly in the launcher and take your users deep into your app instantly. You can create up to 5 shortcuts, either statically or dynamically.
  • Circular app icons support โ€” lets you provide great-looking rounded icon resources that match the look of Pixel and other launchers.
  • Enhanced wallpaper metadata โ€” lets you provide metadata about your wallpapers to any picker displaying the wallpapers as a preview. You can show existing metadata such as label, description, and author, as well as a new context URL and title to link to more information.
  • Image keyboard support โ€” expands the types of content that users can enter from their keyboards, letting them express themselves through custom stickers, animated gifs, and more. Apps can tell the keyboard what types of content they accept, and keyboards can deliver all of the images and other content that they offer to the user. For broad compatibility, this API will also be available in the support library.
  • Storage manager Intent โ€” lets an app take the user directly to a new Settings screen to clear unused files and free up storage space on the device.
  • APIs to support multi-endpoint calling and new telephony configuration options.

Known issues with Android 7.1.1 Nougat Developer Preview

Stability and performanceโ€“ Users may encounter system instability (such as kernel panics and crashes). Users may see higher than expected battery drain when the device battery is low.

Systemโ€“ Device may freeze when users are playing videos in multiple windows and change the volume.

Frameworkโ€“ Device with low storage stuck in boot loop animation on reboot. Native crash in Bluetooth observed when trying to share a file from Files app.

Setup Wizardโ€“ Users setting up a factory-reset device and using Setup Wizard may experience minor issues with UI and functionality.

Backup and restoreโ€“ After backup, launcher data and wallpapers may not be restored.

How to Install Android 7.1.1 Nougat Developer Preview NPF10C on Nexus devices?

There are 2 ways to install the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat DP on your eligible Nexus devices. The first is via enrolling the device in automatic OTA updates and secondly by flashing the full factory image of the Nougat Developer Preview.

Method 1: Sign up for Android Beta Program via OTA

For this, all you need to do is sign up for the Android Beta Program from hereย and apply for an OTA update. Later, you will be notified of a new Android N-MR1 NPF10C update of nearly 1260 MB. Just install it as a normal OTA update and enjoy the new ROM.

No matter what Android version your device is running, if you sign up for the Beta program, you will receive an OTA update notification. However, make sure you are on the official stock Nexus firmware be it Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow or the Android 7.0 Nougat. Once you download and give permission to install, the devices will be updated automatically.

The OTA update zip files are not yet available. Most likely they wonโ€™t be. However, the OTA zips can be captured and will be available from the Android 7.1 Developer Preview 2 and final as well. We will update it here. Update: OTA zip file downloads now available.

How to uninstall Android 7.1.1 Nougat and ย from your Nexus and restore official stock Android 7.0 firmware?

You can simply opt-out of the Android 7.1.1 DP by simply visiting the same Android beta program page listed above in OTA section and select opt out. Moreover, you can also flash the factory image of the stock firmware of Android 7.0 Nougat or Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Note: Before you proceed with uninstallation, better backup all your apps and data as it wll require you to factory reset and format all data.
